The Toronto Maple Leafs announced Friday that the club has re-signed forward Alexei Ponikarovsky to a one year contract. As per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Ponikarovsky, 23, appeared in 13 games for Toronto last season collecting three assists with 11 penalty minutes. He spent the majority of the season with St. John's of the American Hockey League and registered 46 points (24 goals, 22 assists) with 68 penalty minutes in 63 games. He finished first on the team in plus/minus (+18), second in goals (tie) and fourth in points. Ponikarovsky was selected to participate at the 2003 AHL All-Star Game for Planet USA but did not play due to injury.
The native of Kiev, Ukraine has played 43 career NHL games registering nine points (three goals, six assists) with 25 penalty minutes. He has also been held pointless with four penalty minutes in 10 career NHL playoff games. Ponikarovsky was Toronto's fourth choice, 87th overall in the 1998 Entry Draft.
