by Staff Writer / Toronto Maple Leafs
The Toronto Maple Leafs announced Sunday the acquisition of defenceman Marty Wilford from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for the rights to Group II free agent forward Shawn Thornton. The Maple Leafs re-assigned Wilford to the St. John's Maple Leafs of the American Hockey League.

Wilford, 24, placed second in team scoring with the Norfolk Admirals of the AHL in 2000-01. In 80 games for Norfolk he recorded seven goals and 41 assists for 48 points to go along with 102 penalty minutes. In nine playoff games he collected one goal and five assists with eight minutes in penalties. He played in one preseason game this month with Chicago and recorded an assist.

The native of Cobourg, Ontario was originally Chicago's seventh choice, 149th overall, in the 1995 Entry Draft.
