The Toronto Maple Leafs announced Monday that they have signed defenceman Carlo Colaiacovo to a multi-year, entry level contract.
Colaiacovo, 19, was tied for the Leafs lead with six points on three goals and three assists in six preseason games. His three goals also tied him with three others for the team lead.
The Toronto native was the Maple Leafs' first pick, 17th overall, in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.
Last season, Colaiacovo recorded 40 points on 13 goals and 27 assists in 60 games with the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). He won a silver medal as a member of Team Canada at the 2001 World Junior Hockey Championships and was named to the OHL's 2001-02 Second All-Star Team.
Colaiacovo will join the Maple Leafs in Wheeling, West Virginia, and will be available for the team's season opener on Thursday against the Penguins in Pittsburgh.
