The Toronto Maple Leafs announced Thursday that forward Alexei Ponikarovsky has been recalled from the St. John's Maple Leafs of the American Hockey League.
Ponikarovsky, 22, has played 21 games for St. John's this season and has collected 13 points (eight goals, five assists) with 22 penalty minutes. He currently ranks second on the team in goals.
Ponikarovsky appeared in four preseason games with Toronto and registered two assists with two minutes in penalties. The native of Kiev, Ukraine played eight games with the Maple Leafs last season and scored two goals. He was pointless with four penalty minutes in 10 NHL playoff games.
Ponikarovsky has six points (three goals, three assists) in 30 career NHL games. He was Toronto's fourth choice, 87th overall in the 1998 Entry Draft.
