by Staff Writer / Toronto Maple Leafs
TORONTO (AP) - Jonas Hoglund scored the go-ahead goal in the third period as the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Washington Capitals 4-2 on Tuesday night.

Capitals star Jaromir Jagr missed the game with a strained right knee. The five-time NHL scoring champion expects to miss two weeks. The Capitals also were without center Adam Oates (sore left ankle) and Steve Konowalchuk (shoulder surgery).

Mikael Renberg, Dmitry Yushkevich and Garry Valk also scored for the Maple Leafs, who have won four of their last five games.

Peter Bondra scored his 11th goal for the Capitals, who are winless in five.

Toronto's Curtis Joseph stopped Joe Sacco's penalty shot early in the third period. Joseph made a glove save on Sacco's backhand shot, keeping the game tied at 2. Joseph finished with 36 saves.

Hoglund's backhanded shot, after Renberg's shot on net, gave Toronto the lead at 12:33 of the third. Mats Sundin made a centering pass to Renberg, whose shot bounced off goalie Olaf Kolzig to Hoglund, who scored his fifth goal of the season.

Renberg made it 4-2 with his fourth goal of the season at 18:32.

Yushkevich gave Toronto a 1-0 with a power-play goal at 6:57 of the first when he snapped a wrist shot between Kolzig's pads. Just 14 seconds later, Valk banged in a rebound, giving Toronto a 2-0 lead.

Washington's Sergei Gonchar scored a power-play goal at 7:23 of the second. Gonchar snapped a wrist shot over Joseph's right shoulder. Andrei Nikolishin and Dainius Zubrus assisted. Bondra tied it at 2 at 8:50 of the second. Nikolishin and Zubrus assisted again.

Notes: Jagr, acquired from Pittsburgh over the summer, suffered the knee strain Oct. 10 and had another setback Friday night when he was checked hard late in a game against Phoenix ... Joseph has allowed just eight goals in his last six games. ... Konowalchuk will miss the next four months while recovering from major shoulder surgery.
