"The Toronto Maple Leafs announced their season ticket prices for the 2002-03 season on Tuesday. Tickets will be scaled from $35 to $175. Approximately 6,500 or 43 percent of tickets will be available at $70 or less, with more than 2,100 or 14 percent capped at $35.
"The budget for team payroll next season will be increased substantially, and part of that increase must be off-set by an increase in ticket prices," said Chris Overholt, vice president of sales and service for Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Ltd. "We believe we need to increase our player salaries to take us that next step toward winning the Stanley Cup."
The Leafs have now played in 10 playoff series in the past four years. Only the Colorado Avalanche have played in more during that span. The Leafs finished the 2001-02 season with 100 points, third-best in the National Hockey League, and reached the Eastern Conference Finals for the second time in the past four years.
Despite a rash of injuries throughout the post-season, they eliminated New York (Islanders) and Ottawa before falling to Carolina, four games to two, in the conference championship round. The 2002-03 regular season schedule will be announced by the NHL in the coming weeks.
