Keys to the Game: Maple Leafs vs. Senators

by David Alter / Toronto Maple Leafs

The Maple Leafs are in Ottawa tonight to take on the Senators. Here are the Leafs’ three keys to a win.

Make the Hamburglar Grimace

He has yet to lose a game in regulation in his NHL career. Senators goaltender Andrew Hammond is 12-0-1 and the Leafs only have spoiler to play. Ottawa has embraced their goaltender and they’ve put themselves back in the playoff picture. While hot, Hammond did allow a season high four goals in his last start. If the Leafs can shake the slow starts, they can get to Hammond early and cause a major setback to their Ontario rivals.

Tight Defence

The Leafs have allowed the opposition to come into the critical areas without much difficult. The result of this has been 18 goals against over the last four games. This simply can’t be allowed to happen with regularity. Veteran defenceman Eric Brewer has had a bit of a rough go since arriving at the trade deadline. He will take part in his 1000th game tonight. For the Leafs sake, it should be some inspiration.

Reimer in goal + Special Teams

James Reimer has generally performed well at Canadian Tire Centre. This season has been a bit of a different story with a combined seven goals in his two appearances this season. Still, Reimer is motivated to make the most out of his first start in eight days. The Leafs special teams department has to come through. Toronto’s last game in which they scored at least one power play goal and went perfect on the penalty kill also resulted in their last win (March 11 vs Buffalo). If they can replicate that, they will get points.
