The Toronto Maple Leafs are in Edmonton as they take on the Oilers. Here are three keys to a Leafs win.
The Maple Leafs have struggled in their last few games and much of it is derived from the lack of finishing checks. Motivation level for some players is at its lowest and it needs to pick up. Playing with a physical edge can inspire and it’s severely lacking right now. Being aggressive will translate in wins, especially against a team that is in a similar spot like the Oilers.
Don’t give them room
Very few teams have a confidence level that is as low or lower than the Leafs right now but the Oilers are definitely one of those teams. Edmonton is on a seven-game winless streak (0-5-2) and have given up at least four goals in the last four games. So long as the Leafs don’t give Edmonton’s offence any room to manoeuvre, the Leafs should be in an excellent spot to grab two points.
The Oilers have vastly improved their special teams since the All-Star break at 28.1 percent. The Leafs have had all kinds of fits on the penalty kill, despite having a better performance in their game against Vancouver. Keeping Edmonton’s surging power play at bay is key to limiting any damage the Oilers can inflict. Toronto’s power play has been atrocious since the All-Star break, including a season low 0-for-7 performance on Saturday night.
