The Maple Leafs are in Tampa to take on the Lightning tonight. Here are the Leafs' three keys to a win.
Keep Stamkos at bay
The Markham, Ont., native is known for having big games when squaring off against his hometown team. Steve Stamkos is currently on a three-game goal streak (four total) and riding a five-game point streak against the Leaf (six goals, three assists). As the Lightning chase the Canadiens for first in the Atlantic division, Stamkos remains a leader and the biggest motivator on the team. Neutralize Stamkos and the Leafs have a shot.
PK needs a fix
The Maple Leafs penalty kill has struggled mightily of late. In Florida, the team have up their 11th power play goal over the last eight games. The special teams need a bit of a tweak and the Leafs could use this time to work on it against some leaded weapons that Tampa has. The Lightning have scored four power play goals in their last three games, including a perfect 2/2 in a 3-0 win over the Buffalo Sabres.
Make the most of your opportunities
The Lightning don’t give up a lot of shots, tied for second in the league at 27.5 shots against per game. While there has been a commitment to generating more chances toward the net, the Leafs have to bury the shots they get. Going to the net proved to be successful against the Panthers. More of that will be needed against Tampa.
