On Tuesday, December 13, Joe Bowen was pleased to present a cheque for $9000 to the UFCW Leukemia Research Fund with the proceeds from this year's sales of Bowen's "Holy Mackinaw" T-shirt. Bowen expects the final tally to be over $15,000 when the funds from shirts sold at Air Canada Centre are included.
| Joe Bowen has been the voice of the Leafs for 23 years.
Bowen, who has been the voice of the Leafs on radio and regional television broadcasts for the past 23 years, became a big supporter of leukemia research after his son, Sean, beat the dreaded disease 13 years ago. Sean, now 14 has lived a healthy life ever since
Joe started selling the T-Shirts with his trademark "Holy Mackinaw!" exclamation two years ago and has since raised over $20,000. The shirts are available year round and can be purchased at both Air Canada Centre's Centre Sports store and by mailing Bowen directly.
As far as Holy Mackinaw goes, Bowen says the expression was commonly heard in his house when young.
"Holy Mackinaw was something my dad used to say all the time when I was a kid," said Bowen. "I'm not sure where he got it, but one game in about 1988 I used it and Bill Watters laughed quite a bit so I decided to keep using it."
Bowen has been a great supporter of many community initiatives over the years. The Sudbury, Ontario native was inducted into the Sudbury Kinsmen sports hall of fame in June of 1999, and received the Fred Sgambati award from the Canadian Children's Foundation in 1988.
Fans who would like to purchase a T-shirt can send $23 (shirt and shipping) to:
