When the Leafs celebrate their Centennial Home Opener this Saturday, it'll be quite the birthday party as one of the world's most popular electronic artists (and not to mention a multiple Grammy-nominee) Joel Zimmerman, AKA deadmau5 will be debuting an exclusive Leafs track at the game, specially written for the team.
So how did the collaboration of the century, or rather to celebrate a century come to be?
"I got an e-mail from management asking if I would consider doing it and I was like heck yeah," said deadmau5.
Writing the anthem for a fan-base as passionate as Leafs Nation required a delicate balance.
"How do you make something simple, original and different?"
"I knew I had to do something that was palatable and worked for the crowd and also lend itself to some audience participation. These thoughts all formed in my head before I even sat down."
The idea behind the new track is to signal a new chapter in the life of the team, which is embodied in the high-tempo, driving beats of the track.
"That was part of the appeal. I didn't want to just license out an existing track. It was better to do something different but still retaining some qualities that I possess with my own music. I wanted to keep it in the vein of something driving and anthem-ish."
Deadmau5 said that he was excited to meet the team on Saturday and no doubt Leafs Nation will be excited to hear their new anthem.
Fans attending the Leafs Centennial Celebrations this Saturday, October 15th are asked to be in their seats by 5:30pm. If you're watching at home, you can tune in to the live broadcast on CBC starting at 6pm.
