Coming To A Newsstand Near You - Leafs Nation - The Magazine

by Staff Writer / Toronto Maple Leafs

(March 23, 2004) -- With the Toronto Maple Leafs in the midst of a tight race for playoff positioning, Leafs Nation - The Magazine hits the newsstand with its debut issue this week.

Carlton unveils the first issue of Leafs Nation.

The magazine gives fans an inside source for information that will feed their insatiable appetite for the scoop about their favourite team.

Unlike other sports or hockey magazines, Leafs Nation - The Magazine looks at hockey as a lifestyle, focussing on what makes our game such a great Canadian sport and the Leafs such a special team. It delves into the off-ice lives of Leafs players and alumni, as well as looks at ways Toronto fans can further enrich their lives through hockey.

Developed as a benefit from the newly launched Leafs Nation Fan Club, the magazine will be published three times this season and sold on newsstands across the Greater Toronto Area. It is expected to be a bi-monthly publication in 2004-05.

"Leafs Nation - The Magazine is an extension of the Leafs brand and another way to bring our fans closer to their favourite team, and to the game they love," said Tom Anselmi, executive vice-president and chief operating officer of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The most famous Leafs Nation citizen graces the cover of Issue 1.

"Hockey is intrinsic to Canada's culture and the Leafs have played a huge role in influencing this passion. Our magazine reflects on hockey as part of our culture and as a lifestyle. There aren't any magazines on newsstands today that look at hockey from this perspective."

Anselmi added that the goal is to create a unique newsstand product that goes beyond the predictable realm of a hockey magazine.

The first issue of Leafs Nation - The Magazine, which hits newsstands Wednesday, features actor and Leafs super fan Mike Myers on the cover. Articles range from Leafs goalie Ed Belfour's passion for cars, to Leafs forward Gary Roberts' nutrition and fitness regime, to profiles of fans who express their loyalty to the team in different ways.

St. Joseph Media, publisher of Toronto Life, Saturday Night and Elm Street The Look, has been recruited to publish Leafs Nation - The Magazine.

"We're excited to be the publisher of Leafs Nation - The Magazine. The magazine is such a unique offering for sports fans and magazine lovers," said Greg MacNeil, group president, St. Joseph Media. "What makes this magazine so great is that it appeals to both the Leafs super fan and casual Leafs fan by taking a different look at the off-ice attributes of hockey."
