Checking Out Fenway Park

by Joe Bowen / Toronto Maple Leafs

Just recently returned from a terrific weekend in Boston as I took my sons Liam, Derek and Sean for their first visit to Fenway Park.

The oldest ballpark in Major League Baseball is still the crown jewel of stadiums. We took the stadium tour getting to see the old ball yard from all angles including on top of the famous Green Monster in left field. Fenway Park is a National treasure and as such can not be torn down even if the Red Sox some time decide that they must play out of a new stadium.

That brought to mind the plight of Maple Leaf Gardens still standing on the corner of Church and Carlton Streets but virtually empty of activity or use. Various business opportunities were rumoured for the Grand Old Lady but nothing as yet has transpired since the Leafs left for Air Canada Centre.

When the move was first approved my idea for the Gardens was to turn it into a Casino with the proceeds going to hockey and other minor sports across Canada. I felt it would be a great legacy for national shrine to continue to give back to the kids of Canada. I still think it would be a perfect solution.
