The Mats Sundin watch is officially on after the Leaf captain and soon to be unrestricted free agent let it be known that he would not make a decision about returning to Toronto for a 14th season until the Leafs sorted out their front office situation.
Sundin was in Pittsburgh yesterday to receive the Mark Messier Leadership award. Sundin was recognized for his outstanding performance as a player, his leadership skills and his dedicated humanitarian efforts. Ironically, the award singles out loyalty to teammates and leadership both on and off the ice.
Sundin's decision not to waive his no trade clause and remain with his teammates last spring probably played a role in his winning of this award. I don’t think there is a Leafs fan that doesn't want to see Mats come back to Toronto to effectively finish his illustrious career.
You can certainly understand his point of view about not tipping his hand until he finds out who his new boss is going to be and what he thinks of Mats Sundin. Not to mention who will be coaching the team next season.
There is a lot riding on the line as the GM search continues with not only fans but players alike getting antsy over the decision making process.
To all of you who donated your beer, wine and spirit containers to the annual UFCW Local 12R24 and Beer Store bottle drive for Leukemia Research I want to say a heart felt thank you. The tally is being made and we should know in a week or so the final figure. Last year we totaled $500,000.
