Tropical Storm Puts No Damper on Unplugged

The Tampa Bay Lightning wrapped up another successful, and dry, edition of Lightning Unplugged Tuesday after a capacity crowd flooded into Cantina Laredo at The Shops at Wiregrass.

The standing-room-only audience of over 400 created a sea of blue and silver to see special guests Antero Niittymaki and Martin St. Louis, ask questions, get autographs and just enjoy being with other Lightning fans.

Despite original plans to host Unplugged outside, in an open-air environment, Lightning fans from across the Tampa Bay Area migrated to Wesley Chapel to make Tuesday an outstanding event.

“It was amazing,” said Angelina Lawton, Senior Vice President of Corporate Communications. “The fact that, despite the weather, we had hundreds of people show up for this event, really shows how successful Unplugged has been.”

Former Lightning Forward Chris “Dinger” Dingman was the night’s honorary host again, and didn’t hold back the comedic act with former teammate St. Louis.

In fact, the question and answer portion of the program took place in three different languages after St. Louis admitted, when he was at the University of Vermont, he wasn’t great at English or French.

Niittymaki and St. Louis’ pitching skills were also on display as each of them tossed autographed merchandise into the crowd during the giveaways segment.

Unplugged, a part of the Lightning’s “Together We Will” campaign, was designed to give fans the opportunity to interact with the players and give them the opportunity to ask questions in a relaxed, casual environment.

“Lightning Unplugged brings a whole new form of interaction,” said Jason Doyle of Wesley Chapel. “Unplugged allows you the chance to meet the players off the ice.”

Garrett Richardson, another resident of Wesley Chapel, said that this was his first Lightning Unplugged event and admitted it was unlike any other event Lightning he’s been to in the past.

Unplugged will be a staple of the Lightning’s “Together We Will” marketing campaign all year long, bringing at least two Lightning players into the neighborhoods of Tampa Bay each month to family friendly restaurants and pubs.
