Saturday night’s frustrating loss against the Florida Panthers, in which the Lightning owned a large advantage in shots the entire game, was deceiving, Lightning head coach John Tortorella said today. Despite the shot discrepancy, Tortorella felt the Lightning got away from their “defense first” mentality that had helped the team to play better lately.  By Tortorella’s count the Lightning allowed 17 scoring chances in the game – way too many to be surrendering.

Rookie goaltender Karri Ramo played an excellent game to allow the Lightning to enter the final six minutes with a 2-1 lead, but defensive breakdowns resulted in two late goals for the Panthers.

“We opened up a little bit and gave up too many chances,” Tortorella said today following a 50-minute practice at the St. Pete Times Forum. “We need to concentrate on defense first and letting the offense come from that.”

The Bolts headed to St. Louis following practice and will meet the Blues tomorrow night at the Scottrade Center. Don’t forget about the 8:30 p.m. start time because of the time difference.
