Today is all about Olaf Kolzig in Washington. Kolzig walked into the visitor’s locker room at the Verizon Center for the first time this morning after spending his entire career just a few feet down the hall. The Washington media came out in force to talk with Kolzig, who will start against the Capitals tonight. Kolzig was surrounded by cameras and microphones for the better part of 10 minutes.
“There was never any doubt he wanted to play this game,” Head Coach Barry Melrose said this morning about Kolzig starting. Melrose went on to say that some players don’t like to face their former teams, but Kolzig seems to relish the opportunity.
As for tonight’s lineup, it will stay the same other than the addition of Kolzig instead of Mike Smith. Evgeny Artyukhin skated this morning but isn’t quite ready, while Matt Pettinger is a healthy scratch.
There was one practice casualty this morning, as associate coach Rick Tocchet hit a rut in the ice and fell face first, opening a gash in his cheek.
That’s it for me; I’m taking the short walk over to the White House to hopefully watch President-elect Barack Obama arrive this afternoon.
