St. Louis, Stamkos Rolling into Quarter-Finals

As the 2009 IIHF World Championships move into the quarter-final stage, Lightning and Team Canada forwards Martin St. Louis and Steven Stamkos are firing on all cylinders.


Entering the single-elimination quarter-finals St. Louis leads all tournament scorers with 14 points, assists with 10, is tied for second in plus/minus with a plus-8 and is tied for sixth in goals with four. It is the second consecutive World Championships for St. Louis after recording two goals and 10 points in last year’s tournament.

Stamkos, playing in his first World Championships, has proven that he belongs. Wearing number 17 as opposed to his 91 with Tampa Bay, Stamkos is tied for the tournament lead for goals with six and is tied for second in plus/minus with a plus-8. His eight points rank ninth in the tournament. Stamkos has scored four of his six goals on the power-play.

Team Canada begins the quarter-finals on Thursday against fellow Lightning forward Martins Karsums and Team Latvia at PostFinance Arena in Berne, Switzerland.
