The Lightning have now won 11 consecutive games, setting a franchise record. The record-setting win came on the road against the top-ranked offensive team in the league (the Lightning entered the game second to Colorado in goals scored per game). So the big takeaway from the victory was how well the Lightning defended against the prolific Avs. Outside of a tough few shifts early in the game and a wobbly segment late in the second period, the Lightning played a strong defensive game. They rebounded well from Saturday's leaky third period against Philadelphia.

The New York Islanders are one of the top defensive teams in the league. A significant part of their success is related to how well they defend in their own zone. They protect the front of the net, block a lot of shots, and box out opposition players to limit potential rebound shots. A big key to the Lightning's victory tonight was they delivered a similarly excellent defensive performance. As a result, it was a game that didn't feature many scoring chances.
