Lightning To Host Seat Belt, Alcohol Awareness Night
/ Tampa Bay Lightning
TAMPA BAY – The Tampa Bay Lightning, in conjunction with the Lightning Foundation and The Katie Marchetti Memorial Foundation, will host Seat Belt & Alcohol Awareness Night on Friday, February 29 when they host the Toronto Maple Leafs at 8 p.m. (Sun Sports, AM 620 WDAE). The goal is to remind fans about the importance of wearing seat belts and responsible alcohol usage.
The Lightning Foundation is working with the family of Katie Marchetti, a teenager who lost her life one year ago in a tragic car accident while not wearing a seat belt on Interstate 75. Her mother and father, Laura and Vincent Marchetti, are raising awareness for children and parents about a preventable cause of death so that they don’t have to go through a similar situation.
Three law enforcement agencies and safety related organizations will be in attendance to help promote seat belt and alcohol awareness throughout the evening with educational materials and interactive displays throughout the St. Pete Times Forum. There will be a dinner reception starting at 6 p.m. for sponsors and public officials. The reception will be highlighted by speeches at 6:40 p.m. by Lightning television play-by-play announcer Rick Peckham, House Representative of District 62 Richard Glorioso, Lightning and St. Pete Times Forum Chief Operating Officer Sean Henry, as well as Laura and Vincent Marchetti.
The Florida Highway Patrol, AAA, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, Tampa Police Department, and MORE HEALTH, Inc. will be providing interactive displays to help educate fans about the importance of wearing seat belts. The Tampa Alcohol Coalition, Pepin Distributing Company and Zingo will also be on hand to educate fans about responsible alcohol usage.
Students from local high schools will be on the Chrysler-Jeep Plaza outside the St. Pete Times Forum from 6-7:30 p.m. telling Katie’s story, giving out awareness t-shirts, stickers and other items to fans that sign a pledge to wear their seat belt. The death rate of teenagers due to failure to wear a seat belt in the state of Florida has risen more than 400 percent in the past two decades.
