The 2004 Stanley Cup Champion Tampa Bay Lightning have re-assigned defenseman Doug O'Brien to Springfield of the American Hockey League today, Executive Vice President and General Manager Jay Feaster announced.

O'Brien, a 6-foot-1, 200-pound native of St. Johns, Newfoundland, skated in two games with the Lightning during his recent call-up, including his first NHL game on January 29 at Washington. He logged 13:16 of ice time against the Capitals and also played January 31 versus Toronto.

He has three goals and 15 assists this season in 45 games with the Falcons. He currently leads all Springfield defensemen in points.

In 2003-04 he appeared in 74 games with the Falcons and scored four goals with 13 assists and 76 penalty minutes. He led all Falcon defensemen in points and had one game winner. He also skated in three games with Johnstown of the ECHL and recorded two penalty minutes.

O'Brien was selected by the Lightning in the sixth round, 192nd overall, at the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.
