The Tampa Bay Lightning announced today its participation in a unique community initiative for Lightning fans to enjoy throughout the upcoming holiday season, as it presents Tampa’s Downtown on Ice.
Beginning November 19 and running through January 2, Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park, located at 600 N. Ashley Dr. in Downtown Tampa, will transform into a winter wonderland and feature the city’s only outdoor ice rink for community members to enjoy throughout the holiday season. The rink will be open every day, including Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. as well as Sunday from 12 p.m. to 8 a.m. In observance of the holidays, the park will be closed on Thanksgiving Day and will close at 4 p.m. on Christmas Eve before re-opening on Christmas Day, also at 4 p.m. Admission cost is $10 for a 90-minute open skate and includes the price of skates.
To kick off the partnership, the Lightning will hold a watch party at the park on November 20 as they face off against the Buffalo Sabres. Fans are encouraged to bring their own blankets or lawn chairs in order to ensure themselves a seat. Although festivities don’t officially begin until 4 p.m., the park and its exclusive outdoor ice rink will open at 10 a.m.
In addition to providing fun throughout the majority of the winter season, the park will also host a number of great community events in the days leading up to Christmas. On December 4, the city’s annual Santa Fest will kick off at 10 a.m. and include a variety of activities such as ice skating, a holiday crafts fair, a visit with Santa Claus, continuous holiday entertainment and more. There will also be a holiday parade to serve as the highlight of the event, which will caravan through the streets of Downtown Tampa. In keeping with the spirit of holiday cheer, the Lightning will also hold a large presence in the park prior to the December 18 home game against the Buffalo Sabres.
