In conjunction with tonight's Dave Andreychuk Night, the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Lightning Foundation announced they will award an annual scholarship in honor of the captain of the 2004 Stanley Cup Champions. The Dave Andreychuk Scholarship of Excellence will be awarded each year to a local youth hockey player who exemplifies determination, leadership and a commitment to excellence on the ice, in the classroom and in the community.

"We are pleased to make this announcement today as we honor Dave for his past contributions to the Lightning organization," said Lightning President Ron Campbell. "In our minds, winning the Stanley Cup represents the ultimate accomplishment in team sports and Dave obviously was a major part of that great victory for all of Tampa Bay. Creating this legacy in his honor will forever help us all remember what he did as a member of the Lightning organization.

"With a joint goal of further developing the youth hockey programs in Tampa Bay, Dave and the Lightning share the vision of enriching the lives of the young people that participate in those programs. We hope the Dave Andreychuk Scholarship of Excellence continually rewards deserving young people on an annual basis for years to come."

Recipients will be Tampa Bay-area high school graduates who have played high school or youth hockey throughout their teenage years and are preparing for their first year of college or university. The Lightning Foundation will formulate a scholarship application that those interested can submit during their senior year of high school. Solid work and dedication in the classroom, volunteer work in the community and excellent team play on the ice will be emphasized in the application review process.

Applications will be available at or by calling 813.301.6590 beginning February 1, 2007. The first scholarship recipient will receive a $2500 grant before the 2007-08 academic year.
