Hockey Canada announced that Tampa Bay Lightning forward Teddy Purcell is amongst the first group of 17 players invited to compete for Team Canada at the International Ice Hockey Federation Men's World Championship, May 4-20, in Helsinki, Finland and Stockholm, Sweden.
The group of 17 announced players includes two goaltenders, four defensemen and 11 forwards.
Purcell, 26, played in 81 games with the Lightning this season, collecting 24 goals and 65 points to go along with a team-high plus-9 rating. The St. John’s, Newfoundland native set career highs in goals, assists (41), points, power play goals (eight), game-winning goals (three) and plus/minus. The 6-foot-2, 201-pound forward ranked second on the Lightning in assists and third in goals and points. He recorded his second career hat trick in Tampa Bay’s season finale in Winnipeg on April 7. Purcell registered a Lightning season-high and career-high 11 game point streak from February 21 through March 8, recording six goals and 13 assists during that span. He was also named the NHL’s Second Star of the Week for the period ending February 26, registering three goals and seven assists in four games.
