Dustin Tokarski stopped 35 of 36 shots while both James Wright and Marc-Olivier Vachon registered a goal and an assist as the Tampa Bay Lightning upended the Dallas Stars 3-1 on Tuesday afternoon at Centre Ice Arena in the Traverse City NHL Prospect Tournament.
The Lightning took a 1-0 lead with their first power play goal of the tournament midway through the first period. Richard Panik entered the attacking zone with speed down the right wing. He feathered a backhand saucer pass across the slot to James Wright. Wright re-directed the puck past the right leg of Stars goaltender Jack Campbell and into the net for his second goal of the tournament at 11:51.
The Tampa Bay lead doubled less than two minutes later. Wright emerged with the puck in the right corner and sent a quick pass toward the slot into a maze of skates. Marc-Olivier Vachon found the loose puck and chipped a shot over the right shoulder of Campbell at 13:20.
Vachon helped Tampa Bay stretch their lead to three goals midway through the second period. He caused a neutral zone turnover and entered the Dallas zone at the left point, speeding across the slot before spotting Carter Ashton at the bottom of the right circle. Ashton sent a quick shot past the left leg of Campbell at 8:33 for his first goal of the tournament.
Dallas spoiled Tokarski’s shutout bid with 14.7 seconds left in the third period as Jace Coyle netted a power play goal. Tokarski finished the evening with 35 saves.
The Lightning will be seeded second in the Howe Division entering tomorrow’s tournament finale.
