Lightning Claim Defenseman Mike Kostka Off Waivers

TAMPA BAY – The Tampa Bay Lightning have claimed defenseman Mike Kostka off waivers from the Chicago Blackhawks, vice president and general manager Steve Yzerman announced today.

Kostka, 28, has skated in nine games with the Blackhawks this season, posting two goals and three points to go along with eight penalty minutes. He scored his first career NHL goal on October 19, 2013 against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The 6-foot-1, 210-pound defenseman has also appeared in two games with the Rockford IceHogs of the American Hockey League this season, recording an assist and a +3 rating.

The Etobicoke, Ontario native has skated in 44 career NHL games over the past two seasons with the Blackhawks and Maple Leafs, collecting two goals and 11 points with 35 penalty minutes. Last season while with Toronto, Kostka set career-highs for games played (35), assists (eight) and points (eight). He has played in 343 career AHL games over seven seasons with the IceHogs, Toronto Marlies, Norfolk Admirals, San Antonio Rampage, Rochester Americans and Portland Pirates, collecting 37 goals and 184 points.

Kostka was a member of the Lightning affiliate Norfolk Admirals during the 2011-12 season. He won a Calder Cup Championship that season, posting six goals, 12 points and a +14 rating during Norfolk’s Calder Cup run in 18 games played.
