The Tampa Bay Lightning honored Kelly Scott as the 41st and final Lightning Community Hero of the year this morning at Osceola Middle School, located in Largo. Scott, who received a $50,000 donation from the Lightning Foundation and the Lightning Community Heroes program, will donate the money to Faces of Courage, Mason's Christmas Wish Fund, Northside Baptist Food Pantry, Osceola Middle School Food Pantry and Special Kids.
Scott has been helping feed families and their children who do not have enough to eat at her own expense for many years. She launched a food pantry program at Osceola Middle School, stocking it with non-perishable food items to feed hungry students. Learning that more than 16 million children across America go hungry to school each morning, she wanted to stop that epidemic. Scott established a no-ask policy at the school so everyone feels welcome with no questions asked.
A single mother of three, Scott took it a step further recently and now delivers nourishing, diet-specific meals to 25 grateful families in the Tampa Bay area, including the homeless. She delivers the meals to their homes, temporary hotels and motor homes to ensure everyone is nourished appropriately. Having raised three children of her own, Scott has firsthand knowledge of the struggles it is to feed and clothe a family going through difficult circumstances.
