TAMPA BAY - The Tampa Bay Lightning honored Jeff Darrey as the fifth Lightning Community Hero of the year during the first period of tonight's game against the Boston Bruins. Darrey, who received a $50,000 donation from the Lightning Foundation and the Lightning Community Heroes program, will donate the money to the Trinity Cafe.
Darrey's is one of the founding directors of the Trinity Café. His motivation was sparked when he saw homeless people on the steps of the church seeking help and refuge. The Café is the only nutritious meal provider that serves faithfully within the Tampa Bay area. Last year, 10,785 volunteers provided 26,963 hours of service to the café, saving nearly $600,000 in labor costs. With the community's support, a commercial kitchen and dining facility was purchased for $1 million for the café in 2013. The following year, service expanded to include weekends and now serves 365 days a year.
The Trinity Café has served a million meals with dignity, passion, love and respect and is one of Darrey's passionate commitments to service within the area. His mission is to ensure that the Café thrives and is available for those long past his own time and involvement. His legacy and the legacy of the Café will be a consistent presence of unconditional love in this community through a nutritious and delicious meal.
