Bolts by the Numbers: Lightning players near top of league in shots for percentage

by Matt Samost / Tampa Bay Lightning

The following is the second installation of the ‘by the numbers’ series for the Lightning. Keep a lookout on the Lightning website for more data breakdowns as we continue to provide some fun, interactive data visualizations.

Advanced statistics have become more commonplace in the NHL over the past few years. With a drive to continually look for ways to evaluate player performance, things like Corsi and Fenwick ratings have become more readily recognized. Today’s analysis looks at the percentage of “shots for." It tracks the amount of shots that are taken by the team while a player is on the ice. The percentage figure comes from the total amount of shots for divided by the total amount of shots taken by both teams combined. A score of 50% is the league average (as shown by red line).

This particular analysis shows the top 15 players in the league so far in 2014-15 in “shots for” percentage during only 5 on 5 play (with a minimum of 100 minutes played this season). Led by Victor Hedman and Nikita Kucherov, the Lightning have FOUR of the top 10 players in the league in this statistic.
