Frequently Asked Questions

You must be at least 18 years of age by July 11th and be a high school graduate (or equivalent) in order to audition. There is not an age limit to auditioning but our teams typically have team members ranging from 18-32 years of age.

There will be a short across-the-floor combination taught during the first round that might include a single turn, kick, and some basic moving steps. The round after there will be a slightly longer routine taught although the skills required will be the same. Skating skills are not necessary but are preferred. We will require all of the girls who make the team attend skating practices to access their ability. Those who can skate will be able to skate during activities that require it. Those who skate will also need to obtain their own skates within our guidelines.

Rehearsals, fitness and skate training will begin the week after auditions and be conducted 1 to 2 times a week in the evening from 7:00-10:30 p.m. up until the first game. For the remainder of the season, rehearsals will be once a week in the evening from 7:00-10:30 p.m. either at our gym or at Amalie Arena. The game schedule will be released by the date of auditions and can range from 1-3 games at home per week falling on any night of the week or weekend afternoon. Lightning Girls are expected to arrive 2 1/2 hours prior to game time and typically work for 5 hours each game. All rehearsals are mandatory and the team rotates the game schedule so that each member works approximately two thirds of the home games.

We do not have a height or weight limit to be a team member. However, team members are expected to be in top physical shape for the duration of their contract and look great in our uniforms. Uniforms do consist of half tops, shorts, and pants.

Most everything is provided although members need to purchase their own ice skates. We provide all uniform pieces for games and appearances and bags. Some things that are not provided are tights and hose, skates, practice apparel, and the maintenance cost for uniform pieces.

Lightning Girls are paid an hourly rate for games worked and some appearances. Rehearsals, mandatory Lightning functions and some appearances are not paid. All members of the team also have full-time or part-time jobs or are full-time or part-time students. There is approximately a 15-30 hour time commitment each week.

All current members of the team must audition each season, however, veterans are given a first round by and will begin the audition process at the semi-final round.

Most parts of the auditions are closed to the public. Only judges and candidates will be allowed to observe preliminaries, semi-finals, and interviews.

Before the audition process begins, make sure you are in good physical shape by doing cardio and weight training so you feel comfortable in the audition attire and performing for a long period of time. It is recommended that you take some dance classes to brush up on technique and understand the types of moves that will be taught. You may also want to check out local ice rinks for open skate time so the auditions will not be your first time on ice skates. Classes or personal trainers are not necessary but make sure you look and feel prepared for auditions.
