Last December, Kraken 2021 first-round draft choice Matty Beniers went to Team USA training camp as one of the youngest players invited. He not only made the squad, his skating and stickwork in all zones on the ice impressed the hockey world as the U.S. won gold at the International Ice Hockey Association World Junior Championship.

Beniers is back in camp at Plymouth, Mich., starting this week, leaving his No. 3 University of Michigan team hoping to be one of the leaders of this year's American team seeking its first back-to-back golds when the puck drops Dec. 26 in Edmonton.
Beniers has 11 goals and 11 assists for Michigan, with a +16 plus-minus rating, which means he has been on the ice for 16 more goals scored by the Wolverines compared to goals against. It's a bit of a crude stat because there are other factors than just the individual player, but he is co-leader in the rating on a team that has seven first-round NHL draft choices and six more drafted players on the roster. He is co-leader in goals, too.

One of the more encouraging signs of Beniers' prowess at the NCAA level is his alternate captain distinction as the only underclassman named to Michigan's captaincy group. All others are seniors.
It appears leadership comes naturally to Beniers, since he is already reported as taking the initiative to welcome and encourage this December's youngest player at the Team USA camp. Logan Cooley, 17, a fellow center who will be eligible for the 2022 NHL Draft, is a promising player from the U.S. Development Team Program, of which Beniers is an alum.
"He's a great kid," Beniers said during a Zoom video conference with reporters Monday. "Really nice, funny once you get to know him a bit and he's an awesome player, too.

"I would just tell him not to worry too much about the tournament and to play his game. Don't defer to older players; that was something someone told me last year and it was pretty important advice: Play your game, don't give up the puck too fast.
"You know how you play the game and you're here for a reason, not just to defer to older guys. And enjoy it. I think he'll be just fine."
All extremely solid advice from Beniers, who turned 19 just last month.

Draft Choices Roundup

Second-round draft choice and defenseman Ryker Evans continues to sizzle on both ends of the ice in the Western Hockey League. He notched five assists in three game this week as his Regina Pats squad won two of three games. Evans has 27 points (four goals, 23 assists) in 26 games. He turned 20 Monday.
Fourth-round pick Ville Ottavainen is heading to World Juniors himself. The defenseman is part of Finland's U20 team. He notched three points this week in three games for his team in Finland's top professional league. He continues to get top-four minutes among defense pairs.
Fifth-rounder Jacob Melanson is part of a revived Acadie-Bathurst Titan squad, which has a new coach. Melanson was first star in last Friday's 5-0 win with a goal and physical play. ABT has won four straight by a cumulative 30-4 margin. Melanson has 15 goals and seven assists for 22 points in 26 games.

Seventh-round pick Justin Janicke, a freshman at NCAA Notre Dame, was back in the Irish lineup during a weekend series home split with Michigan State. Sixth-round selection Semyon Vyazovoi continues his stellar season as one of the top goaltenders in Russia's top juniors league; he is 15-5-1 with a 1.75 goals-against average and .940 save percentage.

Developing Pros Roundup

Player development in the NHL is a multi-year process and some part art form. You analyze statistics, ask your scouts to evaluate, get regular reports from coaches of the prospects and then go a bit with gut feeling.
When center Luke Henman wasn't earning enough time at American Hockey League affiliate Charlotte, the Kraken brain trust decided to send Henman, the first player Seattle signed to a professional contract, to ECHL affiliate Allen (TX). The idea was to positively impact Henman's progress by providing him more minutes on ice.
Rather than get discouraged, Henman took the opportunity to show what he can do. He has totaled six points in his first three games with the Americans, including a hat trick in a weekend win. He has four goals, including shorthanded goals in back-to-back nights, plus two assists on a team that is suddenly 6-3-1 in their last 10 games.
Henman was recalled by Charlotte Monday as the Checkers prepare for a four-game week.

Third Period Madness, AHL Edition

While the Kraken were scoring three third-period goals to push Columbus into overtime Saturday night at raucous Climate Pledge Arena, a pair of Seattle prospects were helping to bring down the house - and 4,000 stuffed teddy bears - in the AHL in Charlotte.
The Checkers were down 3-1 mid-third period Saturday when Connor Carrick (signed by the Kraken as a free agent) launched a shot from center ice that eluded the Syracuse goaltender to spark a four-goal comeback and decibel levels that any Kraken fan would appreciate. Cale Fleury, the Kraken's pick from Montreal during the expansion draft, scored the game-winner on a rocket of a shot from inside the blue line.
Fleury also had the honor of scoring the first goal for the home team, prompting a tradition across the AHL. On Teddy Bear Toss night, when the home team scores its opening goal, fans throw stuffed bears onto the ice. Those teddies are then collected and donated to charity.
"It's my first Teddy Bear goal so it's a pretty cool experience," said Fleury, who, yes is Haydn Fleury's younger brother. "I've always wanted to score one and it was nice to get it."
Charlotte coach Geordie Kinnear has been impressed with Fleury's play all season: "He just comes to work. He's ultra-competitive, he plays hard all the time and he's a great teammate. We're happy and lucky to have him. I'm glad he got rewarded because he's played a lot of hard minutes for us."
