On the second day of the NHL Draft last summer, Kraken scouts implored General Manager Ron Francis to select defenseman Ryker Evans in the second round as the 35th pick overall. Francis told media later there was some "pounding on the table" from scouts.
During the Kraken's inaugural training camp, Evans turned more heads among players and coaches. He performed well in a scrimmage and a preseason game appearance before returning to the Regina Pats of the Western Hockey League juniors league.

Everyone on staff was feeling good about the pick and Evans' play during the WHL season hasn't doused the enthusiasm. He has 16 points in 17 games (three goals, 13 assists) for a young team in a rebuilding mode, including 16-year-old phenom Connor Bedard. Earlier in the month, Evans was named WHL Player of the Week.
The 6-0, 191-pound Evans sees himself as a leader by example: "I am definitely taking on even more of the role, helping the young guys," said Evans, 19, during a phone interview this week.
Evans isn't standing still on his own game either. Per the offensive elements of his play, Evans said he is working on getting shots to the net (he has 43 in 17 games) and "more deception to evade [opposing] forwards to generate offense."
"I am also focusing on tightening my defensive play," said Evans. "Playing good defense is most important, getting my stick on pucks and directing where you want the other team's forwards to go."
The Calgary native is committed to helping his team to jump some places in the WHL standings. Regina changed coaches this week.
John Paddock, Regina general manager and vice president of hockey operations, took over a 6-10-0 team that was enduring a seven-game losing streak. Regina snapped the skid Saturday against Moose Jaw and plays two more road games Tuesday and Wednesday.
Evans said Paddock "commands a lot of respect" and expressed gratitude to outgoing coach Dave Struch.
"Both of them have really believed in me," said Evans. "I can't thank them enough."
Here's a roundup of other Kraken draft choices and developing pros:

Draft Choices

Matty Beniers(2021, 1st round, 2nd overall). Seattle's top prospect leads his University of Michigan (10-4-0) team with 10 goals. The Wolverines entered the weekend at No. 1 in the NCAA rankings but lost two overtime games to No. 14 Notre Dame. Beniers scored a power play goal on a blazing shot from the right faceoff circle and added a primary assist in Friday's game. Beniers was named Big 10 First Star for the first two weeks of November. He was Big 10 First Star twice last year during his freshman season.
Ryan Winterton(2021 3rd round, 67th overall) - Winterton is rehabbing a shoulder injury and not yet active for the Ontario Hockey League Hamilton Bulldogs.
Ville Ottavainen (2021 4th round) - The 18-year-old defenseman is playing top-pair minutes for his Finnish pro team. Ottavainen was part of Sweden's U20 team for the recent 4 Nations Tournament, a notable achievement.
Jacob Melanson(2021 5th round) - Melanson's Quebec Major Junior Hockey League team, Acadie-Bathurst Titan, split two games over the weekend and stand with a 9-9-0-2 record (W-L-overtime loss-shootout loss). Melanson is the team's second-leading goal scorer.
Semyon Vyazavoi (2021 6th round) - The young goaltender's team had the week off.
Justin Janicke(2021 7th round) - Justin was unavailable for this weekend's games. His No. 14 Notre Dame squad beat Michigan twice this past weekend, both overtime wins.

Developing Pros Roundup

The Kraken's group of developing pros playing for American Hockey League affiliate Charlotte Checkers have been instrumental in the team's victories. In his split time between the Kraken and Charlotte, forward Max McCormick has scored two game-winning goals (GWG).
Defenseman Connor Carrick and forwards Alexander True, Carsen Twarynski and Scott Wilson have all notched game-winning goals, making it six GWGs in the Checkers' seven victories. The team is 7-7-1 after splitting six games on a 10-day road trip.
Charlotte's three victories on the trip were consecutive, with the three-game winning streak made possible by a late Carrick power play goal to beat the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, 4-3, in regulation. Carrick one-timed a pass at the left faceoff with two minutes remaining.
In that victory, McCormick and Wilson scored back-to-back shorthanded goals on the penalty kill. McCormick's tally was notched with only three Checkers skaters on the ice versus five for Lehigh Valley, then Wilson scored too at the more common shorthanded, 5-on-4 goal.
McCormick scored the first goal of last Friday's game against Utica, redirecting a pass 63 seconds into the game. But it represented Charlotte's only score in a 4-1 loss . Sunday, the Checkers played at Hershey with Cale Fleury and Gustav Olofsson both scoring go-ahead goals, but Hershey came back with three unanswered goals and the victory.
