Kraken & Black Girl Hockey Club partner on new beanie

Kraken fans, this just in: special-edition Black Girl Hockey Club beanies are now available in the team's retail stores at South Lake Union and Bellevue. All net proceeds go to BGHC for its scholarship program created to help subsidize the costs of playing hockey for Black girls and young women from nine to 18 years old.
The dark-blue custom beanies sporting pink-stitched BGHC and Seattle Kraken logos sell for $32.95. The knit hats, sometimes called toques in hockey circles, went on sale Wednesday in the team stores this month to honor Black History Month and continue a partnership between BGHC and the Kraken, which took
BGHC's "Get Uncomfortable" social media pledge
"to disrupt racism on an off the ice" in late October.

The BGHC scholarship fund has already boosted the hockey aspirations of girls and young women across North America, from Texas to Manitoba to right here in the Pacific Northwest. The goal is fund Black females across the globe "to pursue their interest in hockey, a sport where they are often underrepresented" with awards made three times a year.

The first local scholarship was awarded to Maealie Glanzer, recipient of a $1,000 BGHC Winter 2021 Scholarship. She plays defense for the Whatcom County Amateur Hockey Association as well as the Seattle Junior Lady Admirals, level 12U. Maealie "dreams of going to the Olympics with the USA Women's Hockey Team one day" and hopes to inspire other Black girls and boys to try the sport, according to the BGHC official announcement.
The scholarships support players at identified levels: Seasonal cost ($5,000), Tournament participation ($3,000), Equipment needs ($1,000) and Hockey camp scholarship ($500). All applicants are required to show financial need and maintain at least a 2.5 grade-point average. The application includes essay questions and final candidates (with a parent or guardian present) will connect with the BGHC scholarship committee by secure Zoom video conference.

There are even more reasons to pick up a beanie for yourself or the whole team at your Kraken store of choice. BGHC takes a three-pronged approach to its mission "to inspire and sustain passion for the game of hockey within the Black community, specifically with our mothers, sisters, daughters and friends."
