WORCESTER, MA –
Goaltender Jeff Zatkoff
stopped 46-of-47 shots to lead the Manchester Monarchs passed the Worcester Sharks, 2-1, at the DCU Center on Saturday night.
Manchester (7-9-0-1) is tied for second place in the Atlantic Division with the Providence Bruins (7-8-1-0) with 15 points each. The Sharks (5-3-0-2) rank fourth in the Atlantic Division with 12 points.
“Another close game and this time we came out on top,” said Monarch Head Coach Mark Morris. “Emotions ran high throughout the entire three periods. There were a few scraps, lots of big hits and lots of compete in both teams. Both goals we scored were earned. The first came from a heads-up feed from (Linden) Vey to (Justin) Azevedo through a seam and Azevedo beat (Tyson) Sexsmith low glove side. The second was high blast by Slava Voynov
on a pass from Marc-Andre Cliche
. It was a good win and another solid effort. We are hopeful this win helps us build some momentum and confidence before we play next weekend.”
The Monarchs took the lead for the first time at 3:16 of the third period off the stick of defenseman Slava Voynov
for his second tally of the season. Monarchs left wing Richard Clune
controlled the puck behind the Sharks net before passing it to center Marc-Andre Cliche
in the right corner. Cliche pushed the puck back to the right point where Voynov releases a blast to beat Sharks netminder Tyson Sexsmith on the eventual game-winning goal.
Right wing Tommy Wingels opened the scoring for the Sharks by stuffing home a rebound at 5:46 of the first period. Wingels passed the puck from the top of the left face-off circle to forward Mike Connolly in the right slot. Connolly wristed a shot producing a rebound that the Monarchs defense failed to clear from in front of the net. Wingels swiped at the loose puck and lifted it over the glove of Zatkoff for his first goal of the season.
The Monarchs knotted the game up at 1-1 when center Justin Azevedo
tallied his fourth goal of the season. The goal was set up by Monarchs right wing Linden Vey
who corralled the puck off a redirection from left wing Dwight King
. Vey skated along the left wing boards before firing a cross-ice pass to Azevedo. The center wristed a shot from the right face-off dot that beat Sexsmith low on the glove side at the 19-minute mark of the second stanza.
Zatkoff (3-2-1) earned his third victory of the season stopping 46-of-47 shots. Sexsmith (2-2-2) took h is second loss of the season making 23 saves on 25 shots.
Manchester went 0-for-5 on the power play. The Sharks were 0-for-6 with the man advantage. Notables:
