COLORADO SPRINGS, CO – Situated in a cozy atmosphere, but on an ice sheet larger than accustomed to, the Kings fought handily for a 2-1 victory Thursday night against the Colorado Avalanche at the Broadmoor World Arena.
With the win, which extended to a six-round shootout, the Kings remain unbeaten in regulation time in their six preseason contests played so far, and Colorado remains without a win in it’s seven exhibitions played.
Both clubs traded goals in the first period, the only to be scored in regulation time. The Kings came out firing, registering 20 shots on goal in the first frame, only to beat Colorado’s Reto Barra one time.
Tyler Toffoli got the Kings on the board less than four minutes into play, capitalizing on a well-timed pass from Jeff Carter. Carter, on a two-on-one rush with Toffoli, evaded a Colorado defender with patience, then hit Toffoli with a crisp pass which the Kings’ youngster tipped home and past Colorado goaltender Reto Barra to give the Kings an early 1-0 lead. Tanner Pearson also got an assist on the goal.
With just 14 seconds remaining in the first, Maxime Talbot evened the score for Colorado, beating Jonathan Quick high to the glove side, just as a penalty to Kyle Clifford had expired.
In the second, the Kings found themselves in penalty trouble, getting called for four minor infractions. No damage was done on the scoreboard, though.
Jonathan Quick was pulled after two periods of play. He stopped 20 of the 21 shots Colorado directed his way. Quick has now stopped 36 of the 38 shots he’s faced in four periods of preseason play.
Martin Jones took over for Quick in the third, and the Kings’ backup goaltender was solid again, stopping all eight shots he faced in the final period, and setting aside all five shots the Avalanche took in overtime.
After a scoreless overtime frame, the game extended to a shootout – the fourth game for the Kings that has extended to a shootout this preseason.
Neither of the teams’ first three shooters could find the net, they traded tallies in the fourth and fifth rounds, and after Colorado’s Daniel Briere was snubbed by Martin Jones in the sixth round, prospect Jordan Weal sealed the deal, beating Reto Barra to clinch the preseason victory.
The Kings’ ‘That 70’s Line’ combined for the club’s only goal in regulation time. The trio, consisted of Tyler Toffoli(2G, 5A) , Jeff Carter (2G, 4A), and Tanner Pearson (1G, 5A), has combined for an astounding 19 points during the preseason.
Jarret Stoll, in his first preseason action after undergoing hip surgery during the summer, scored for the Kings in the fourth round of the night’s shootout, beating Reto Barra high and to the top-right corner with a snap shot.
Called for seven minor penalties on the night, the Kings held Colorado’s power play scoreless.
The Kings are now 5-0-1 during the preseason, the Avalanche are now 0-5-2.
On Saturday evening, the Kings will see the Colorado Avalanche again for their preseason finale for Frozen Fury XVI at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The puck is slated to drop at 7:00PM PT, and will be broadcast live on FOX SPORTS WEST.
