latest on the playoff race
  • What Happened Last Night?
    • The Good: Nothing.
    • The Bad: Kings led with less than six minutes left and lose in regulation, doesn't get much tougher to swallow than that.To make matters worse, the Blackhawks win -- making them ever tougher to catch. Flames win too and pass the Kings for ninth place in the West.
    • The Odd: With three games against Sharks remaining, the Kings best chance to hold their own fate is a 3-0 record vs. San Jose. They have no games remaining against Phoenix and Dallas, the other two teams ahead of them in the standings.
  • Tonight's Games That Matter and Your Guide For Rooting:
    • Edmonton at Colorado, 12 p.m. -- Oilers. Idle Kings could fall to 11th in the West with an Avalanche victory.
    • Anaheim at Dallas, 5 p.m. -- Ducks. I know this will be tough Kings fans, but we want to keep the pesky Stars as close as possible.
    • San Jose at Phoenix, 5 p.m. -- Coyotes. Really, this one is debatable so take your pick. We can agree that we don't want to see a three-point game here.

Tie-Breaking procedure
Division leaders are seeded 1, 2, and 3 in Conference standings. If two or more clubs are tied in points during the regular season, the standing of the clubs is determined in the following order:
  • The fewer number of games played (i.e., superior points percentage).
  • The greater number of games won, excluding games won in the Shootout.
  • The greater number of points earned in games between the tied clubs. If two clubs are tied, and have not played an equal number of home games against each other, points earned in the first game played in the city that had the extra game shall not be included. If more than two clubs are tied, the higher percentage of available points earned in games among those clubs, and not including any "odd" games, shall be used to determine the standing.
  • The greater differential between goals for and against for the entire regular season.
