by Staff Writer / Los Angeles Kings
Columbia, SC – The Reading Royals (13 – 11 – 4 = 30; 1st North Division) were trounced by the Columbia Inferno, 7-1, in the Royals' first trip in team history to the Carolina Coliseum in Columbia, South Carolina. Things went from bad to worse, as the Inferno's Owen Fussey scored 4:46 into the game; and Columbia proceeded to ring off five more (Brad Ralph, 17:02 of first period; Anthony Battaglia, 3:10 of the second; Derick Martin, 12:47 of second; a second by Fussey, 53 seconds into the third; and Chris Thompson, 50 seconds later) before the Royals got on the scoreboard. On the Royals' goal, Shawn Collymore slipped behind the Inferno defense and ripped a snap shot over the shoulder of goaltender Robert Gherson (2 – 9 – 1; 22/23) for his eighth of the year at the 12:15 mark of the third. Columbia tacked on a late power play goal by Mike Jarmuth to add insult to injury. Royals' goaltender Jeff Pietrasiak (6 – 4 – 0; 21/26, 39:07) started and picked up the loss allowing five goals on twenty-six shots before being pulled in favor of Ryan Munce 53 seconds into the third period. Munce made 12 stops on the 14 shots he faced in 19:07 worth of time.
