Reading , PA – The Reading Royals of the ECHL, affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League and the Manchester Monarchs of the American Hockey League, announced that the team has agreed to terms with defenseman Shawn Thompson.

Last season, Thompson (6'2"/190), who hails from Melville, Saskatchewan, scored eleven goals, assisted on nine others, and picked up 81 penalty minutes in 44 games for HC Gardena in the Italian Serie A2/Serie B1 League. The twenty-six year old Thompson went to Italy after a stellar four year career with the University of Western Ontario , where he was chosen as a tournament all-star when the Mustangs won the Canadian Interuniversity Sport championship in his freshman season.

In his final year at UWO, Thompson served as the team captain for the Mustangs and was selected as a first team Ontario University Athletics' all-star. Thompson was also a member of Team Canada 's entry in the 2005 World University Games. Prior to attending UWO, Thompson played four years of major junior hockey in the Western Hockey League and was selected as the Kamloops Blazers' Rookie of the Year in 1997-98.
