ONTARIO, Calif. – The Ontario Reign, proud affiliate of the NHL Los Angeles Kings, defeated the Idaho Steelheads, 7-4, on Friday evening in front of 6,945 fans at Citizens Business Bank Arena. The match was the first of three games between the two clubs this weekend.
The Reign was the first to get on the board when right wing Tony Voce scored a power play goal at 4:08 in the first period. Forward Greg Hogeboom started the play off when he shot the puck toward the net and Voce tipped it past Idaho goaltender Richard Bachman.
Defenseman Andrew Martens gave Ontario a two goal lead when he scored an unassisted goal with 2:04 left in the first. Richard Bachman tried to cover the puck with his glove but Martens got to it first and found the back of the net.
Right wing Sean O’Connor scored his 13th goal of season at 10:51 in the second period when he received a feed from right wing Geoff Walker and shot the puck through Bachman’s legs. Hogeboom also assisted on the play and picked up his second assist of the game.
Geoff Walker scored his third goal of the season when he shot the puck toward the net and it hit off an Idaho stick and bounced over the goal line. The unassisted goal came at 13:27 and gave the Reign a four goal lead.
With less than a minute left in the second period, Tony Voce scored his second goal of night to put Ontario up 5-0. Forward Michael Pelech stole the puck from Richard Bachman as he miss played the puck behind his net. Pelech passed the puck to Voce who then shot it into the net.
In the third, Idaho center Tyler Spurgeon scored a power play goal 53 seconds in that beat Ontario net minder Mike Zacharias. Center Marty Flichel and left wing Mark Derlago assisted on the goal and brought the score to 5-1.
Greg Hogeboom scored his 30th goal of the season and his third point of the night seven minutes into the period when he shot the puck over Bachman’s glove and placed the puck in the top shelf of the net. Right wing Jon Rheault registered an assisted on the play and Michael Pelech picked up his second assist of the night.
Idaho answered back when left wing John Swanson redirected a shot from defenseman Brendan Milnamow that beat Zacharias at 10:19 in the third period.
Steelhead forward Kael Mouillierat got his first goal of the season in his first professional game at 13:51 when he received a pass from center Matt McKnight and one timed the puck over Zacharias’ stick and into the back of the net. Left wing Evan Barlow also assisted on the goal and brought the score to 6-3.
With 1:16 left in the third, Idaho forward Mark McCutcheon scored a power play goal when he received a pass from Marty Flichel. The Steelheads capitalized on the extra skater they got from Bachman’s empty net and came within two goals of the Reign.
Ontario right wing Jon Rheault sealed the win when he scored an empty net goal as he was tripped by an Idaho Steelhead player. Left wing Chris Curran picked up an assist on the play and the Ontario Reign defeated the Idaho Steelheads with a final score of Reign 7, Steelheads 4.
