ONTARIO, Calif. – The Ontario Reign, proud affiliate of the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings, beat the Alaska Aces 3-2 before 6,433 fans at Citizens Business Bank Arena Wednesday night.
C.J. Stretch scored the only goal of the first period when a loose puck came his way in the left circle and he snapped it past Adam Courchaine to give the Reign a 1-0 lead. The goal was unassisted.
Beau Erickson held the Aces scoreless until 13:24 of the second period, when Scott Howes scored to tie the game at one.
Alaska took a 2-1 lead early in the third before Jason Fredricks tied the game, 2-2, with a fluke goal off of the glass as he attempted to dump the puck into the Aces’ zone. Courchaine had vacated the net to play the carom behind the net, but the puck took a lucky bounce off of a seam between the plexiglass panels and into the wide-open net. It was Fredricks’ first goal as a member of the Reign. With the Reign killing a penalty, Alaska turned the puck over in the neutral zone and Dusty Collins capitalized. Collins found twine with a hard slap shot to put the Reign up for good, as Ontario held on to beat Alaska, 3-2.
Erickson made 34 saves to earn his first victory in a Reign sweater, while Courchaine made 26 saves in the loss.
