Redirected To A Win

by Staff Writer / Los Angeles Kings
MANCHESTER, NH – Right wing Brandon Kozun gave the Manchester Monarchs their third consecutive victory as they topped the Worcester Sharks 2-1 at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Sunday afternoon.

Manchester (20-11-1-1) picked up their 20th win of the season and is in first place in the Atlantic Division with 42 points.  Worcester (15-10-2-4) took their third straight loss and remain in third place in the Atlantic Division with 36 points.

“We capped off a three-and-three in style,” said Monarchs Head Coach Mark Morris following Sunday’s victory over the Sharks.  “It was a gutsy effort by our group.  Worcester made it interesting, but our guys did an admirable job fending them off.”

Kozun gave the Monarchs a two goal cushion at 14:03 of the third period.  From the left corner of the Worcester zone, left wing Ray Kaunisto passed the puck across the slot from left-to-right toward the waiting stick of defenseman Colten Teubert at the right wing half wall.  A powerful wrister from the Teubert was redirected by Kozun at the right doorstep for the game-winning goal.

Defenseman Viatcheslav Voynov got the Monarchs on the scoreboard first with a power play goal at 4:21 of the third period.  Voynov was fed the puck by center Andrei Loktionov in the right slot.  From the center point, Voynov wristed a low shot on net that caromed off of a Worcester defender and found the top of the net over the head of goaltender Alex Stalock.

At 2:47 of the third period, the Monarchs were awarded a penalty shot.  Center Corey Elkins received a pass just outside of the Worcester blueline.  He split the two Sharks defenders before being hauled down in front of the net.  On the penalty shot, Elkins deked right and went left on the shot.  Elkins had Stalock on all fours but the puck trickled across the crease from left-to-right, just missing the right post.

Worcester’s lone goal of the night was scored by forward James Marcou at 16:45 of the third period.  Center Steven Zalewski passed the puck across the slot from the right face-off circle to the left face-off circle.  The puck was collected by defenseman Jay Leach and he shot the puck on goal from the left wing boards.  Marcou swept into the crease, redirecting the Leach drive past Monarchs goaltender Martin Jones for his fifth goal of the season.

Jones (9-2-0) recorded his ninth victory of the season, making 29 saves on 30 shots on goal. Stalock (13-11-2) lost his 11th game of the season, halting 34-of-36 shots on goal.

Manchester went 1-for-4 on the power play. Worcester was 0-for-4 with the man advantage.
