PURCELL CONTINUES WHERE HE LEFT OFF

by Staff Writer / Los Angeles Kings
ORONO, ME – Former University of Maine Black Bear Teddy Purcell, who was the Rookie of the Year with the club for the 2006-07 season, felt right at home as he collected three points in the Manchester Monarchs 6-2 toppling of the Portland Pirates at the Alfond Arena on the campus of the University of Maine on Tuesday night.

Manchester (12-12-3-1) is in fifth place in the Atlantic Division with 28 points. Portland (16-12-1-1) is in fourth place in the Atlantic Division with 34 points.

Purcell collected his first of two goals on the night at 2:25 of the second period. On the power play, left wing Matt Moulson tossed the puck in front of the net for Purcell to chip in for his 10th goal of the season. Defenseman Brian Boyle earned his second assist of the night on the goal to bring the game to 3-0 and the eventual game-winning goal.

Two goals in the first period put the Monarchs in the lead heading into the locker room. Center Gabe Gauthier started things off with a power play goal at 6:02 of the opening frame while defenseman Brian Salcido had one second remaining on his hooking penalty. Cycling the puck, Boyle passed the puck to Gauthier at the point for the slap shot that beat goaltender Gerald Coleman. Left wing Matt Moulson earned the other assist on Gauthier's ninth goal.

Center Matt Ryan doubled the Monarchs lead at 15:22 of the first period with his third tally of the season. Defenseman Drew Bagnall found Ryan between the hash marks for the wrist shot into the back of the net. Bagnall's assist was his first point of the season. Center Marc-Andre Cliche also assisted on the goal to bring the game to 2-0.

Portland began their short-lived comeback with a power play marker of their own. Skating on a 5-on-3 man advantage situation, center Petteri Wirtanen won the draw deep in the Monarchs zone. Salcido picked up the puck and slid it over to defenseman Bruno St. Jacques for the blistering slap shot from the right point that sailed past Monarchs goaltender Erik Ersberg at 4:31 of the second period.

The Pirates brought themselves to within one tally when right wing Brandon Segal scored his third goal of the season at 10:44 of the middle period. Ersberg bobbled the initial shot from center Tyler Bouck. Segal was on the doorstep to slap in the rebound for a 3-2 game. Wirtanen also collected an assist on the goal.

Purcell returned the favor to Moulson on the power play at 16:28 of the second stanza as he sent the puck into the slot for Moulson to chip in from the doorstep. Defenseman Peter Harrold added an assist to the goal as the Monarchs regained their two goal lead, 4-2.

Purcell scored his second power play goal of the night at 1:24 of the third period. Harrold sent a pass to Purcell who fired a shot on Coleman from the left side. Coleman appeared to have made the initial save but the puck slipped free and trickled over the goal line. Gauthier earned his second point of the night by assisting on Purcell's 11th of the season.

Center David Meckler finished the game off with a nifty wrap around goal at 3:35 of the final stanza. Defenseman Richard Petiot fed the puck up the ice to Meckler who did the rest. The rookie center carried the puck around the net and stuffed it past Coleman for the 6-2 final.

Ersberg stopped 29-of-31 shots for the win. Coleman took the loss with 15 saves.

Manchester went 4-for-5 on the power play. Portland was 1-for-8 with the man advantage.
