  • Tonight was the first time in seven meetings at STAPLES Center where the Kings and Oilers didn’t go to a shootout
(Re game recap):  “I was pleased with it (last 40 minutes).  I liked the energy that we had in the first period.  I know we had some turnovers again; the first goal was an example to get right back at us; but the emotional energy, the physical energy and the skating we had good jump on our skates.  And that was a real good thing to see right from the first shift actually, everybody followed up with that.”

(Re Doughty hit on Taylor Hall) “It was a good play.  Both those kids went at each other early in the first period right in front of our bench; Hall came to Doughty.  It was pretty intense.  They were looking to hunt each other down.  Those are two young guys that are going to end up playing against each other for 15 years, so they’re kind of setting the table for that kind of play.  It was good to see the way Doughty responded and I was a little bit surprised that Hall at the beginning because I don’t know him that well but he wanted to get his share of licks in there too.”

(Re physical part of the game): “There were a couple of fights that I thought would maybe energize us a little bit more.  We just never seem to find that level of play that we’re talking about right here from the start for the 60 minutes.  We get going for a while, 40 minutes, 45 minutes, and then we taper off and then give them an opportunity.  Tonight we had good energy from the beginning right through to the end.  We got pretty good stops and our whole mindset of moving the puck and getting it north, getting it in the offensive zone was excellent.  We’ll just have to move on for what happened in the other games now and look forward to what’s in front of us.”

(Re game recap): “I thought the second period was really good. We were in their zone quite a bit of the time… obviously that’s our strength, you know, good things happen out there.”

(Re breaking his scoring slump): “Yeah, it wasn’t the prettiest, but I’ll definitely take it. You know, it’s one of those things where you try not to worry about, you’re not worrying about, but it’s in the back of your head… you’re squeezing your stick a little more. So it was nice to get it out of the way.”

(Re his goal): “Yeah, you know, obviously it’s great to contribute on the score sheet. I haven’t been doing as much this year as I was last, but you know, sometimes the bounces just don’t go your way so to be able to pop one felt great.”

(Re hit on Taylor Hall): “My intent wasn’t to injure him or anything like that, he was flying through the center with his head down and I saw the opportunity to knock him off the puck, and I did just that, and, you know, hit him as hard as I could. But, you know, those things are going to happen in a game and it definitely… our team after that, I thought we picked it up and we were pretty dominant from that point on.”

(Re game recap): “We had a decent start and we felt after the first period we might be able to come after this team and get a win. But too many turnovers allowed LA to feel more comfortable. Losing our high man gave them some odd man rushes. We spent too much time in our own zone which tired a good number of people out and cost us a hockey game.”

“We can move some people around. I can play the fourth line as a power play unit. There are other options a coach can use including man power and the combination of people and we’ll look at that.”

“I love the fact that as a team we were on top of the Hall hit.”

(Re game recap): “We didn’t do enough things right. It felt like the game was up for grabs and we kind of just handed it over. We had some chances on the power play and they got some chances off of that. It’s obviously not a good one but the good news is that we got another one less than 24 hours away and we need to get ready for that one.”

“We want to keep the power play simple and get shots. There were a couple times we had five star chances and we couldn’t bury the puck. For some reason we can’t find a way to get it done and its costing us games.”

“We got to find a way to execute and make sure we’re getting momentum for our power play if we’re not scoring. Right now that’s not the case and they got a couple chances short-handed. It’s obviously not good enough and we need to find a way to rectify it.”

(Re game recap): “The game was alright. We played pretty well the first two periods. We were getting pucks deep, we were skating, and just a couple odd man rushes that went against us.”

“If we’re not getting chances we aren’t helping our team out. We’ve got to keep working on our power play. We got a couple chances the first couple power plays but it’s all about keeping the puck moving and that’s what we’re struggling with.”

“Probably out of most teams we play, the Kings come hard. That’s what they do. They got big physical forwards and they were definitely physical tonight.”
