Post-Game Notes: Kings 2, Ducks 1 (SO)

by Jeremy Zager / Los Angeles Kings

  • Mike Richards has three goals in the last four games
  • Jack Johnson has four points in the last five games (1-3=4)
  • Seven of Johnson’s nine points this season have come via the power play
  • The Kings have now scored a power-play goal in five straight games and 12 of 18 games this season
  • The Kings are 64-0-3 in their last 67 games when leading after two periods
  • The Kings are 7-1-2 when scoring first this season
  • The Kings are now 4-1-1 vs. Pacific Division teams this season
  • Mike Richards and Anze Kopitar each had seven shots tonight
  • Tonight’s shootout went seven rounds (the longest shootout in Kings history went 10 rounds: Feb. 11, 2010 vs. EDM)
  • Jonathan Quick is now 23-9 lifetime in shootouts (stopping 88 of 122 shots = .721 spct)
  • Jarret Stoll is now 14 for 24 lifetime in shootouts
  • Justin Williams is now 5 for 14 lifetime in shootouts
(Re game recap): “Frustration is good. If you’re getting 37 shots, you get 30 shots after two period and you’re getting frustrated because you’re not scoring, that’s OK. That means you’re doing a lot of good things to get frustrated about. That means you’re putting pucks to the net…The five-on-five play was good. The mentality of getting pucks to the net and having traffic was very good. I liked our power play tonight, we moved it around, we got pucks to the net.”
(Re Justin Williams’ shootout goal after his late-game penalty): “I acknowledged that in the dressing room post-game. It was a huge goal for him to get us the two points. It’s unfortunate with the penalty, he’s just doing the things he has to do to recover some pucks on the fore-check as fast as possible. I think he was just a little off-balanced and the stick just happened to come down…He bounced back. He scored a huge goal for us to get the two points.”
(Re Loktionov and Voynov): “I thought both were very good. Loktionov was on Richards’ line and they played against the top lines on Anaheim here tonight. I was very confident with his play without the puck. Both guys [Loktionov and Voynov] are very skilled with the puck. They’ve got a lot of composure. They see the ice. They make some plays…They’re both going to be very good players.”
(Re game recap): “We played well. I thought we came out hard in the third and then stepped back a little more than we wanted to. They got that power-play goal at the end but it was nice to see us win the game.”
(Re 5-on-3 power play goal): “Yeah our power play has been good all year. Same as five-on-five, we got to get the puck on net as much as possible and we did that. We got a fortunate bounce off the end boards and capitalized on it.”
(Re game recap): “We let them hang around. Couldn’t get that second goal past the goalie and unfortunately they scored to tie it up. It’s tough giving up a point to a division opponent but we got two.”
(Re high shot count): “It’s kind of a double edged sword: you put it at the net and sometimes your shots are different because they come from the outside, they come from the red line on dump-ins, but we certainly did that. We were more focused on throwing the puck at the net. Hiller made a lot of great stops. When we get ahead we need to try to put things away.”
(Re snap shot goal in shootout): “I was certain to take a shot. The ice isn’t great in the third period and overtime. I think shooting the puck is the way to go, especially for me because I don’t really have a go-to move that I’m going to use out there. It’s nice to get the win.”
(Re game recap): “The power play advantage was six to one at one point in the hockey game and usually when that happens you are going to be on the receiving end of the shot clock. We didn’t really get our game going until the last half of the hockey game, then we played a lot more of the type of game that’s going to be required.”
(Re one point): “We got a point and we worked hard. It’s one shot away in a shootout to be a difference maker and right now those things aren’t going our way. But if we work as hard as we did in this hockey game, in the last half of it specifically, then there is a light at the end of the tunnel for our group.”

(Re game recap): It’s tough to lose a point in that kind of fashion but I thought the boys played a hard game. We had so many chances there and Quickie [Jonathan Quick] kept standing on his head and really sucking pucks in, not allowing any kind of rebounds in and chances for us all game.”
(Re tuning out frustrations): “I think you have to celebrate the little victories. I felt we did a good job taking pucks to the net, especially in the third we really turned our game on and got going in the right direction. We moved pucks to the net and we moved bodies to the net a lot better. We were rewarded for it with I don’t know if you want to call it a flukey goal, but a goal that probably is going to be saved most of the time.”
