by Staff Writer / Los Angeles Kings

  • Jonathan Quick is now 8-0 in shootouts this season (stopping 30/36 = .833 spct)
  • Quick is 20-7 lifetime in shootouts
  • Jarret Stoll is 7-for-8 in shootouts this season (11-for-21 in his career)
  • The Kings have now killed 35 straight penalties (team record is 46 in 2001-02)
  • The Kings have also killed 78 of their last 83 penalties (94 percent)
  • The Kings have now earned at least a point in 22 of their last 26 games (17-4-5)
  • Quick is 12-4-2 in his last 18 games
  • Stoll scored his 19th goal of the season tonight.  If he gets 20 goals the Kings will have six 20-goal scorers.  The last time that happened was 1992-93 (Donnelly, Granato, Kurri, Millen, Robitaille, Sandstrom)
  • The Kings are now 20-8-6 in one-goal games
  • The Kings finished 3-1-0 vs. Calgary this season (last time they had winning record vs. Flames was 2000-01: 3-1-0)
  • Tonight was the 30th sellout of the season, tying a STAPLES Center record: also had 30 sellouts in 2003-04
(Re Jonathan Quick): “That was a good hockey game.  That was 20 guys out there, 40 guys out there that put a heck of a performance on.  That was intense, very playoff-like, and a lot of good things on both sides.  Both goaltenders, Jonathan Quick made several really big stops especially on their power play early in the first period.  I know [Jarome] Iginla had a one-timer that was as good a save as maybe I’ve seen all year long.  It was a fun game to play and a fun game to coach.”

(Re two points): “That is the best, the two points, absolutely.  That’s what it’s all about, the two points.  We got some games on hand on that hockey club and we move up a bit in the latter.”

(Re shootout starters): “Well all three guys have been very good.  [Michal] Handzus is a smart player when he goes in on those shootouts.  [Miikka] Kiprusoff made a great play on it and we followed it up.  [Jarret] Stoll was looking for high-glove side but he changed it up a little bit here tonight and [Anze] Kopitar, well, that was special.”

(Re game recap): “They have a good line up definitely.  They’ve been charging toward the playoffs now…We came out prepared, obviously you don’t want to give up the point but as long as we get two the rest of the way I don’t think it matters too much.  We just want to keep this pace up and go from here.”

(Re game recap): “Kopi [Kopitar] can do those moves, and hopefully we can win a lot of those games.  It’s fun to see him going like that, be fancy, and score.”

(Re offense): “We’re shooting the puck more, we’re getting more shots to the net.  It started from the power play, getting more confidence…but we do have to get more going five-on-five.  I think it starts with our fore-check, we’re not really in sync too much on our fore-checks right now…we have to get that going.”

(Re shootout success): “I have give a lot of credit to the guys shooting the puck for us.  When we score two out of three I think we’re going to win more times than not.  They’ve been doing that all year, Stolly [Jarret Stoll] has been absolutely clutch for the past year on the shootout, he’s scored some big goals for us, same with Zeus [Handzus] and Kopi [Kopitar], they’ve been doing great for us.  At the end of the day it’s two points and we got to move on and get ready for the next game.”

(Re game recap): “It was a hard-fought game, it was like a game seven playoffs, you can’t ask for anymore than that. Obviously it’s important that we try to get two points, but the effort was there, we did a lot of really good things here tonight, and we come up a little bit short. It gets to a shootout again, but I’m proud of how hard the guys fought and how hard they battled here.”

(Re schedule): “You can’t do anything about the schedule, it’s the games in hand some teams have… it’s obviously, you know, [you] wish it wasn’t the case for a hockey team, with teams sitting with two, three games on hand on us. But you can’t do anything about it. Your schedule is your schedule and we’ve got to find a way to get a win in San Jose.”

(Re goaltending): “Kipper [Mikka Kiprusoff] was outstanding, and their goalie made some big saves too. One power play we hit two posts and it was just one of those nights where you knew it was going to be a tight game right from the start to the finish and that’s what it was.”

(Re coming back from the loss): “I think we’ll battle past it. I think what we’ve been through in the last few months, we know we’ve just got to keep our heads down and keep working hard and we believe that we’re going to be there in the end. So as disappointing as it is tonight losing in the shootout I think we’ll be ready for the next game and we feel confident in our group and we’re just going to keep pushing forward.”

(Re game recap): “Guys played hard, we played well back-to-back. It was a good game, everyone was here to play and that’s on both sides – the Kings played hard too. Both goalies played great, we had some good chances, hit a few posts, could have went in but you go to a shootout anything can happen. The guys played hard and we’d love to get two, but we know in our remaining games we’re going to have to win a ton of them. So we’ve got to keep our heads up and we play like that, especially on back-to-backs, we’ll win most nights”

(Re power play chances): “They played hard too, they blocked a lot of shots. Our PK played very well and blocked a lot of shots. PP-wise on another night, yeah, we feel we move it like that we get three goals. We hit at least two posts, maybe three on it… but we feel like if we get enough of them the next one’s in.”
