Post-Game Notes: Coyotes vs. Kings

by Staff Writer / Los Angeles Kings

  • The Kings have officially clinched a playoff spot
  • The Kings now have 46 wins, tying a club record (1990-91 and 2009-10)
  • Jonathan Quick is now 10-0 in shootouts this season (22-7 lifetime)
  • Jarret Stoll is 9-for-10 in shootouts this season
  • Stoll also scored his 20th goal of the season giving the Kings six 20-goal scorers
  • The last time the Kings had six 20-goal scorers was 1992-93 (Donnelly, Granato, Kurri, Millen, Robitaille and Sandstrom)
  • The Kings have won five straight at home
  • The Kings now have 25 home wins, one shy of the team record (26 in 1990-91 and 2005-06)
  • The Kings are 22-8-6 in one-goal games this season
  • The 98 points is the fifth most in club history
  • Through 80 games last season the Kings were 45-27-8 = 98 pts
  • The Kings need one more win to clinch at least the sixth seed in the Western Conference (or one more regulation loss by Anaheim and Chicago)
  • The Kings had their 34th sellout of the season and 17th straight tonight
(Re game recap): “It’s a win that you want to have and that’s a hard game to win. The guys stepped up. It was a fun game to coach tonight.”

“We thought we were carrying a good tempo, good flow. There were a lot of pucks just getting chipped out by them. There was a couple icing calls. I thought our pace was very good and we wanted to keep pushing that tempo up to try to win it in regulation.”

(Re clinching playoffs): “We can take a deep breath and breathe out but we got two big games ahead of us. We’ve got a couple big games against Anaheim who are playing well. We want to try to keep going to get the home ice advantage.”

(Re Quick in Overtime and Shootout): “In the shoot out Jonathan Quick is outstanding. He really gets his focus and sometimes he amazes me how he comes out on the end of a day during a shoot out situation. He had to make the stops for us to win, and he did.”

(Re first time going to Stanley Cup Playoffs):  “It’s really exciting.  It’s an honor.  We have a great team here and we’re definitely looking forward to it.  We’re going to continue the success we have and take that into the playoffs.”

(Re game): “We definitely trust our systems and we listen to our coaches.  If we stick to that then we definitely have a chance to win every night.”

(Re goal): “Scuds [Rob Scuderi] made a great play to move it up to Simmer [Wayne Simmonds] and Simmer, with all the hard work he’s done all year, he was able to beat the D-men and made a great pass and just gave me a back-door tap-in.”

(Re shootout):  “For Zues and Brownie they’ve got great shots and they’ve got some different moves.  Zues made a great shot.  I was thinking I was going to go there or try something else but just great shots by everybody.”

(Re home-ice advantage): “Yeah, it’s huge and we want it.  Our goal is obviously to make the playoffs.  The home-ice is there for us and these last two games are a big test for us, and getting our game to where we want it to be for playoffs.  If we do that we’ll probably have home-ice because of it.”

(Re game recap): “I thought our guys competed very hard, made a couple mistakes that gave them a couple goals. But that second period we had that power play and had some great chances and couldn’t extend the lead to get it past 2-1. If we could have extended that to 3-1, that could have been a big factor for us.”

(Re team effort): “I liked our resolve all day. We seemed like a real focused team all day and we knew that was the game that was the game that was going to have to be played for us tonight. It was a hard fore-checking game, had to work hard for our opportunities. Fiddler’s line was a good example of that early in the game, they skated hard and they found ways to get a couple goals for us.”

(Re playoff atmosphere): “It’s good, this is when it’s fun – when the games are really important and everything’s on the line, that’s when you want to be out there and playing your best. I think it’s good to get into that mindset.”

(Re Pyatt’s return): “It’s great to have him back.  There’s not many guys that have the stance and are as big as he is or as strong on the puck so it’s a huge asset to us. When we scored we sort of got them off getting the pucks in and just throwing them at the net. Wish we could have gotten some more chances but it’s something to build on.”

(Re getting a point): “It’s a big point but when you come all the way out here you want to find a way to get both of them… we’ve got to find ways to win games. We’ve been close, we’ve been around it, but we just haven’t found ways to win.”

11:30 a.m. at Toyota Sports Center

Note: The Kings will now have their game-day skate Friday at the Toyota Sports Center at 10:00 a.m.
