I was hoping I'd have a chance in the shootout against the Ducks the other night. Going in the fifth round, I had a few butterflies, but I wasn't really nervous. I was actually pretty calm. I knew that if I could out-wait Giguere, I could probably score.
During a shootout, I don't really look for much. I just try to get in tight and stickhandle enough to get the goalie guessing as to which way I might go. In the end, I just go one way as quick as I can and try to put the puck in the net before the goalie can get there.
I like the fact that buildings are able to Zamboni the ice before a shootout starts. It helps a lot, but it also takes a little getting used to after playing the whole period on chopped up ice. You just have to pick up the puck and get a feel for it real quick as you make you're way toward the goalie.
Almost at the end of every practice we do some kind of scoring drill where you get to stickhandle and then go head-to-head with our goalies. That practice helps a lot. Our goalies are also good at telling us what works and what doesn't. A lot of the forwards on our team are also able to shed some light on where to shoot to beat a certain goalie. There's actually quite a bit of chatter on the bench during a shootout because everybody wants to lend a hand before the next shooter steps on the ice.
Fortunately I've had some success in the shootout this season. I also was able to convert on a penalty shot against Detroit earlier this year. So where would I rank myself? I'd like to be in the top three on our team. I would say Fro has to be No. 1. He's Mr. Automatic. You know when he's going down he's scoring; and Pavs, he's sick. I've never seen anybody make Roberto Luongo look as bad as he did in that Florida game a couple of weeks ago. That was unbelievable.
I just stickhandle a lot. That's my thing. I just get in there and start going back and forth as fast as I can. I try to hypnotize the goalie so he's not ready when I finally take the shot.
