I've called California home for the last couple of years. I love it here because it's so warm. I've probably spent more time here than I have in my hometown of Chicago over the last three seasons that the NHL has been in session. I feel very comfortable here.
I still go back to Chicago for the summer months. My wife and I have a house there. We actually rented out the house to a couple that plays for the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League this season, and that seems to be going well.
Chicago and Los Angeles are big cities, but that, to me, is where the similarities end. I know Chicago like the back of my hand. L.A. is so spread out and huge that it's hard to know everything about the city, even after three years.
(Monday) was a day off for the team. On days like that, I like to go out for a nice breakfast and then maybe go to see a show or go shopping. That's about it. Days off are so rare during the season, so I usually want to do nothing more than spend the day with my wife, Angela, and our son, Cameron. I don't really want to get in the car and drive for two hours to go somewhere. I would rather stay local and do just some relaxing things.
We obviously travel a lot during the season, and that can be tough because I'm away from my family. I do like to play Poker with the boys on road trips because it really passes the time. It's fun and it's not cut throat. We play friendly games. I enjoy that time with the guys. I actually get excited when I get on the airplane because that means I'll soon be able to pull out the chips and start playing.
I think our schedule is the hardest in professional sports. It's a grind, so you need to give yourself some time to relax and you really need to take advantage of down time when you get it.
