The Ontario Reign, proud affiliate of the NHL Los Angeles Kings, shut out the Alaska Aces, 3-0, before 4,811 fans at Citizens Business Bank Arena on Sunday evening.
Curtis Darling saved all 28 shots he faced and recorded his first shutout of the season and third consecutive win in Ontario’s third game in as many nights. Darling was named the first star of the game for third consecutive night.
Ontario was first to score in the match for the fourth consecutive game. Right wing Jon Rheault picked up his ninth goal and thirteenth point of the season at 4:33 in the opening period. Rheault sent a backhander up into the top of the net with assists from center Jon Francisco and forward Greg Hogeboom, giving the Reign an early 1-0 lead.
Right wing Tony Voce extended the Reign’s lead to two goals during a power play at 8:35 in the second period. Voce’s first attempt was saved by Alaska netminder Sebastian Dahm, but the puck hit Dahm’s skate and bounced back out to Voce, who shot it up and over the sprawled goalie. Defenseman Jon Landry notched the assist on the goal.
Alaska pulled their goaltender late in the thrid period in an attempt to catch the Reign, but Ontario managed to get the puck out of the zone. Jon Rheault snapped a pass to forward Greg Hogeboom, who flipped the puck into the empty net and extended the Reign’s lead to three goals.
As the final seconds of the game ran down, emotions ran high and defenseman David Walker and right wing Matt Stefanishion mixed it up against the boards. Walker wasted no time in the scrap, throwing several haymakers and taking Stefanishion down to the ice. Ontario went on to win their third straight with a final score of Reign 3, Aces 0.
