Off the Post: Valentine's Day

by Deborah Lew / Los Angeles Kings
As a rule of thumb, Valentine’s Day is one of those controversial holidays.

To some, it is a made-up day of celebration, created by greeting card companies, florists and candy makers as a means to pay their overhead between Christmas and Easter. To others it is an excuse to shower the object of their affection with thoughtful but marginally useless gifts and a romantic dinner…sometimes as a means to get by between Christmas and the next birthday or anniversary.

The Kings roster is full of a youthful guys who shouldn’t have any problem come February 14 (gentlemen, you forgot the date…didn’t you?). Or so one would assume. From ‘single’ to ‘taken’ to ‘married,’ Kings players are the perfect mix for a Cosmopolitan Magazine survey…or perhaps just another “Off the Post” feature.

The Shot: What was your most memorable Valentine’s Day?
The Pass: Which of your teammates is the most romantic?

Justin Williams
Shot: I don’t believe in Valentine’s Day, it’s a made-up holiday by the greeting card companies!
Pass: Anze Kopitar
Jarret Stoll
Shot: I went to Mardi Gras one year!
Pass: Willie Mitchell
Anze Kopitar
Shot: They’re all good for me!
Pass: Rob Scuderi
Jack Johnson
Shot: Most memorable thing is that every year I pretty much wait for the 11th hour for a Valentine’s gift – the 11th hour is my finest hour!
Pass: Hmmm…we’re really reaching there – we’ll go with Willie Mitchell.
Matt Greene
Shot: I got a dog!
Pass: Kyle Clifford
Kyle Clifford
Shot: It’s a stupid holiday.
Pass: Drew Doughty
Trevor Lewis
Shot: I don’t really have a memorable Valentine’s Day.
Pass: Kyle Clifford
Willie Mitchell
Shot: The one where I got engaged to my wife – it was the only way I could fool her!
Pass: Jonathan Bernier
Kevin Westgarth
Shot: Any of the ones with my current wife!
Pass: Oooh – probably Alec Martinez. I mean, he has those Latin good looks, so I assume he brings it pretty hard when he does!
Rob Scuderi
Shot: The first one I had with my wife, who was my girlfriend at the time. It was probably the first time I’d ever had a significant other, so that’s probably my best one.
Pass:  Oh man – it’s hard not to choose myself – but I’ll say Justin Williams.
Trent Hunter
Shot: Any Valentine’s Day I get to spend with my wife
Pass: Oooh – I don’t even know the answer to that one, and that’s probably a good answer!
Editor’s Note: Throughout the season,  staff writer Deborah Lew will boldly seek to satisfy the burning curiosity of fans by using current events and thought-provoking creativity to get a comprehensive off-the-ice look at the boys who’ve captured our hearts and our attention span 82+ nights every year. Each edition will feature two questions: 1) The “Shot,” which will relate to the player giving the answer; and 2) The “Pass,” which will ask the player to name a teammate.
